About Ruby Tuesday
Ruby Tuesday is an American casual dining restaurant chain founded by Samuel E. (Sandy) Beall in 1972. The name of the restaurant was inspired by The Rolling Stone, “Ruby Tuesday”. The song was very popular in the United States when Sandy conceived the idea of starting the restaurant. One may think that Sandy was a fan of the band but this is not true. The name was suggested to him by a fraternity brother called Bob Hope.
Sandy Beall was able to open the first Ruby Tuesday location through the endowment fund of $10,000 he received from his friend and operator of Pizza Huts. He also got additional $10,000 from his University of Tennessee fraternity brothers. With this money, he was able to start the first Ruby Tuesday adjacent to the University’s Knoxville campus. The fact that the restaurant was located very close to university campus, it became a hot spot for students to have hamburgers served to them on English muffins just for $1.45.
When the restaurant began to grow in the early 1980s, there was a need for more capital to fund the expansion plan Sandy had for the Ruby Tuesday. At this point, he was considering going public. But as fate would have it, Morrison Inc., a cafeteria and contract foodservice chain indicated interest. That was how the restaurant was sold to Morrison Inc. in 1982 for $15 million in cash and stock. However, Sandy remain in control of the day-today operations of Ruby Tuesday. The sale actually helped the restaurant in funding its growth.
The restaurant has more than 600 locations spread across United States primarily in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northeast. The chain’s headquarters is based in Maryville, Tennessee.

Ruby Tuesday usually offers complimentary burger to customers on their special days if they sign for the restaurant’s So Connected loyalty program.
